The rafter square is an extremely versatile tool for all types of carpentry work. It is used for precise 45° and 90° markings. It can also be used as a protractor to easily measure and mark other angles. Furthermore, the strong and sturdy edge serves as a 45° or 90° guide for cutting with electric jigsaws or hand-held circular saws—and, with a little skill or a clamp, for other angles as well. Its notches help when offsetting lines along edges, either by marking with a pencil or by scoring directly with a knife (when working with drywall). And of course, the medium and large versions feature original scales for measuring ridge, valley, and rafter angles.
